Tesla Motor Company’s Model S electric sedan has been awarded Consumer Reports’ overall top pick of 2014. The honor is a well-earned kudo for Select 1 Group client Tesla. It is the first time the product rating corporation has named any vehicle Best Overall in four years.

Consumer Reports tabbed the Model S Best Overall for what it called the car’s “exceptional performance and its many impressive technological innovations”. According to CNN, CR is calling the Model S the best car it has ever tested. It reportedly scored 99 out of a possible 100 points in the publication’s testing.

California-based Tesla, found by Elon Musk in 2003, topped a list of over 260 vehicles tested by Consumer  Reports. “The competition in the marketplace has grown fierce. There was a time when a handful of brands dominated our top picks list, but in recent years we’ve seen a more diverse group make the cut,” Rik Paul, Consumer Reports‘ automotive editor, said in a statement.
